Now That Spring Is Finally Here, There Are Many Reasons To Go Outdoors And Soak Up The Sunshine
At last it looks like spring is finally here, and despite recent heavy frost and cold evenings, this morning the sun is bright and the sky is free of clouds. Despite having many things that need doing at home, the chance to feel the warm sunlight has proved to be too much of a distraction and I’ve been out for a walk.
Even though I live in a reasonably well populated village, it’s always peaceful during around lunchtime, and once across the main road outside my home I am straight away on a footpath heading across the fields. There is a small incline first of all and once I’ve walked over that there is practically no human sound in evidence at all.
This track is my favourite local walk. Traverse the first field, sloping down to cross a very narrow back lane, and then another climb across a second field which ends up at a small wood on the summit of the hill. The woods are not a public right of way, but the owners encourage the locals to walk in them by providing stiles to aid access, cleared pathways and occasional benches for the walker who wants to have a brief sit down.
During summer, the trees are thick with greenery, and squirrels and birds are all over the place. A lot of the trees in the wood are sweet chestnuts and when we reach autumn the ground is a carpet of unwanted fruits. But spring hasn’t yet taken hold and right now the branches are bare and the wildlife is quiet with the exception of a few birds in the distance.
On this occasion I have another reason for wanting to visit the woods. An acquaintance and I have been commissioned to make a video to go with an acoustic track recorded by a friend. We have an idea, but have had to wait for the right conditions to take some video footage and this is the first occasion when the weather has been perfect to film outdoors.
Sadly, my friend is away from the area at the moment, so I have to depend on my video skills. Filming the footage is difficult because I have defective sight, so I need to utilise my glasses to see the video equipment, but take them off to look into the distance so that I can see what I’m capturing on film. It’s really quite annoying! On occasions I wonder if I should contemplate Laser eye surgery, but I really don’t know if Laser eye treatment is appropriate for whatever is wrong with my eyes, and anyway, I understand it’s very expensive.
But anyway, I have kept going and probably have enough footage for us to start putting together the video. I have captured the sunlight breaking through the trees, the path heading through the woods, the empty sweep of the fields leading to the marshes and the river some way off, and the enormous cargo ships slowly finding their way along the river to dock further upstream (though the latter bit isn’t for our film concept!).
However, my friend has very good eyesight, so when it comes to the complicated job of putting all the images together with the indoor footage we shot a few days ago, she will get on with the majority of the work and will leave me and my dodgy eyesight to view and comment on early edits, and amend the music if and when appropriate. Luckily, my ears more than compensate for my eyes, and I have very good hearing and also a excellent musical ear. I wonder if I should avoid the concept of Laser eye surgery just in case my hearing worsens when it’s done so that my eyes and ears are back at level pegging!
At the end of the day, the video will eventually be created and uploaded to various relevant music websites, and perhaps people will enjoy it. It would be very good to get some positive feedback and possibly get the opportunity to work with the same band again. Maybe we could actually make some profit from it, and then I could afford to consider the possibility of Laser eye treatment, so that I can shoot video for future projects without the constant need to take my glasses on and off countless times.
