The Session at Work
The Session is the governing board of a Presbyterian church, a group of women and men who are elected by the congregation to serve three-year terms as the overseers and policy-makers of a local congregation's entire ministry. Areas of oversight include administration, personnel, mission, education, property, finances, evangelism, worship, and the spiritual development of members.
The Session is comprised of our Minister of Word and Sacrament and Pastor and sixteen elders.
The session is made up of the Pastor (moderator) plus the elders in active service (ruling elders). First has sixteen active elders divided into two"classes." Eight are elected each year by the congregation to replace eight others whose term has expired. Once ordained, one is always an elder - either active or inactive. The session has authority over all organizations within the local church. Additionally, First's Clerk of Session and Treasurer are nominated and elected by the session annually; currently a teaching elder serves as Clerk of Session but does not vote.
The Session meets every third Sunday of the month beginning at 12:00 noon. Questions, concerns, and communications from members are always welcome.
