Close Range Optical Sights For Hunting
Red dot, holographic and low magnification reflex sights have some profound advantages for hunters over both iron sights and conventional telescopic units. The sight picture is fast to acquire and won't be lost against complex backgrounds. You get much better situational awareness with a non magnifying sight which is ultimately like looking down a drinking straw. They really shine in close country hunting for deer and turkey of the kind that predominates in our Eastern and Southern states. These sights have won over the world's miltaries for close range fighting, but civilian variants are available for hunting which are cheaper than their night vision capable military cousins.
A lot has happened in reflex sight design over the last few years. Aimpoint, market leader in red dot sights recently brought out their Micro H-1 red dot sight. Weighing in at an astonishing 3.7 ounces inclusive of Picatinny mount, this sight has a 4 MoA dot and is parallax free beyond 25 meters. The US Army think enough of this sight's partner, the NV compatible T-1 to trial it in Afghanistan for potential general issue. Ruggedness won't be a problem in a hunting environment. This sight gives you the option of carrying a backup for your scope in your pack or even mounting one on top of the scope to provide a close range backup. Surprisingly, in Europe, the H-1 has a following for wing shooting and is often found on duck hunting shotguns. It takes a single CR2032 battery on which it will run continuously for 50,000 hours.
Eotech holographic weapon sights have achieved great popularity with the US military, have been type classified by US SOCOM and are being purchased in large numbers privately by soldiers and airmen. Eotech have deliberately kept focused on the military and law enforcement markets, but hunters are served by a small range of low cost models suited to their needs. The hunting models take AA batteries and offer the full range of daylight intensity adjustments to cope with all lighting conditions. A big advantage with this system is that you only need to see a small part of the rear sighting window to get the full sight picture, hence snow and dirt won't easily block the sight's field of view. Eotech make the Eotech 512.A65 in three versions, the 512.A65/1 (Black finish), 512.A65MO (Mossy Oak Obsession finish) and 512.A65RT (Real Tree APG HD finish) for hunting in different environments.
Trijicon furnished the sight for the Army's Advanced Combat Rifle in the early 90s. The ACR may have come to nothing but ACOG sights went on to take the world's militaries by storm. The TA44SR-10 is a 1.5X16 sight with a red dot in a circle reticle intended for rapid engagement of close targets. You don't have to worry about batteries or electronics with this sight as it is illuminated by a combination of batteries and tritium. The TA44, like all ACOGs is designed to fit an M16 carrying handle, but a short TA-60 adapter will make it fit any Picatinny mount and a Weaver adapter is also available. The advantage of 1.5X is a better view of the target whilst retaining situational awareness. Standard on the Steyr AUG, this magnification is standard on the service rifles of Austria, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. This tiny 4.9 ounce scope is possibly the ideal wild Turkey sight.
